The trunk is as it looks. Hinges seem strong but even if they weren't, the wood is so light that it wouldn't hurt fingers. If you are looking for a solid piece of furniture, this isn't it. I really like it! I had my doubts as we were taking it out of the box. I thought it looked too big. And too white. But now surrounded by chairs and the couch, it's perfect. It's really cute and the shabby chic distressed-look is just right. You may get splinters a bit however along the edges. So if you're looking for upscale and formal, this may not work for you.
