This wonderful folk art retablo is from Alejandro Chavez in Peru. The nativity-themed retablo is crafted by hand from wood and ceramic, with faux leather hinges on the doors. Such retablos were inspired by the altarpieces first brought to Peru by Spanish conquerors.

Our hand-made, 10 inch Mexican Clay Plate - Trefoil Design, is an excellent way of adding a rustic touch to an elegant table. Length 10.5, Width 10.5, Height 1.5 and Diameter 10.5. Whether used to serve a meal on its own, or as a base for our Soup Bowl (sold separately), the plate made of extra think clay, is not only beautiful, but also quite sturdy and will last many years with proper use and care (each piece comes with a product information sheet outlining the Uses and Care for the product). As with other clay cookware, the flavor of the food cooked in it actually improves with use. Completely natural and safe, contains no toxins or lead. In the semi-desert region of Hidalgo, Mexico, our cazuelas are made by hand by artisans whose craft has been handed down for several generations.

Celebrating the condor and its impressive size and strength, the yawar ("blood" in Quechua) fiesta takes place in Peru's Apurimac and Ayacucho regions. The condor represents the people of Peru, while the bull represents the Spanish. If the condor flies, this augurs a good harvest, and musicians accompany the event. Alejandro Chávez crafts the wooden box to house this retablo, or diorama and paints it in vivid colors. The figures are carefully modeled from ceramic plaster and painted by hand.

Wearing an elaborate crown, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Folk Art Retablo Sculpture extends her arms in benediction. Alejandro Chávez portrays the Madonna named for Mount Carmel in the Holy Land, where a chapel was built in her honor before her assumption into heaven. In 1251 she appeared in England, offering favors and protection to those who wear her scapular. Also known as Immaculate Virgin and Star of the Sea, she inspired the Carmelite order. Known as a retablo, this traditional diorama is housed in a colorful chest crafted of wood and painted. Chávez carefully models each figure and paints them by hand.

It is said the previous four, together with humans, were destroyed by the gods' wrath. The calendar represents the fifth sun and tells the story of the past four and marks the changing of the seasons. The Aztecs (or "Mexica," as they called themselves) believed the sun struggled daily against the forces of darkness. They aided the sun through human sacrifices. Features a hoop for hanging.

Peruvian artisan Julio Gallardo handcrafts the retablo frame from tornillo wood and paints it a creamy pale yellow with bold orange and blue flowers and warm brown trim. Alejandro Chávez recreates the portrait that appeared miraculously on the tilma (cactus fiber cloak) of Saint Juan Diego in 1531.
