The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. This review is going to be only about what I know about this desk because I have not assembled it yet. It arrived in 2 separate boxes; box A and box B. One of the boxes is over 90lbs! I had a chance to open each box to take a look inside. I ordered the Brown and Black color. I really like the fact it is an L-shaped desk; we are going to use it in a spare bedroom for our small business. I need all of the features this desk offers: 5-tier bookshelf, 2 drawers, 1 file drawer, 59" long desktop with a depth of 21", 2 power outlets and 2 USB outlets. All of these features are perfect for running a small business and will make getting my work done more efficiently. The user manual is 50 pages long - I'm already estimating it will take at least 4 hours to assemble! And according to the manual, 2 people are needed in order to flip certain parts. This desk is an excellent value at this price point. Pressed wood, but looks realistic enough. It’s quite solid and well made. It does take quite a bit of time to put together but I wouldn’t say it was hard. The directions had a lot of detail and were simple to follow. I put it together mostly alone over two days (desk one day, hutch the next). My only complaint is the picture on Wayfair is misleading in color. It is not a true grey as I had hoped. Very sturdy!! And well made. Look for screws outside of the interior box as our box was open and the screw package fell out as we opened the bigger box but did find it eventually while clearing up the packaging! I really love this piece as it is better than the 1st 'craft center' (that is how I use it) I purchased a few years ago which was ruined by a flood in our basement (no fault of Wayfair of course)! It has more style with the sliding drawers, costs a lot less, but did not come with a separate file cabinet like the 1st, but do not need it as this one has 2 file drawers. And the best part, is it has a electric recepitcal on the top of the desk for a lamp or another appliance if needed. And it fits in my ensuite walk-in closet (which is my little craft room).
