The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. I was pleased to find out it is mostly wood and not partical board, I have been several hours assembling it and not done yet, will finish after work tomorrow. Pay extra close attention yo instructions they don't tell you what direction or what side of board to use, I found this out after taking it apart several times. It took close to five hours to put together... but I thoroughly read the directions before starting, then didn't rush. Took about four times stopping and starting... First run was 2.5 hours, then shorter spurts with a 10 y/o "helping". It was not difficult to put together; the directions were actually very good. We have two pieces with cracks, but they seemed superficial and surface-level. One edge on the back was not trimmed to slide the backing in - had to take a knife to the plastic trim blocking the groove. The lights around the mirror have three color tones, plus you can adjust brightness. My daughter also loves the LED strip inside the glass top. I purchased this for extra storage in our bedroom. I was especially pleased that the dimensions were exactly as described since I needed the shelves to fit specific items. My husband is in the construction business and does a lot of woodworking projects as a hobby. Even so, it took the two of us almost three hours to assemble. This unit perfectly utilized a tiny 8x10 “bedroom” in my 126-year-old house. I use it as a multi-purpose guest room (for one) and craftoffice area. It’s super resourceful and space-saving which I love and wouldn’t have otherwise conceived would be possible given how tiny the room is. That being said It’s a great deal for what you get, but what you get is a fully occupied weekend for AT LEAST two people, and that’s if you’re familiar with assembling furniture, which I am. This was hands-down the most tedious and time-consuming piece I’ve ever assembled—however, I expected that to be the case and prepared myself for it. I would advise separating all the parts by step (hardware especially) beforehand to prevent stupid mistakes like using screws on step 37 that were meant to be used on step 13. Every detail matters. I am single but I can see how this project could potentially end in divorce. All in all, it’s a great piece for the money—just prepare yourself for not just hours, but DAYS of labor. Highly recommend for the patient DIY folks. The instructions aren’t great but they rarely are. Fortunately there are QR codes on each step which link to videos showing the guys in the factory assembling it.
