The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. I absolutely love this desk. I love that I can put both size monitors on top and it frees up the bottom part. There’s lots of shelving space on the inside and also the three drawers provide a sufficient amount of storage. The only downside to all of this was the instructions and the number of pieces that came in the box to put this whole thing together. There were a couple of instances where some pieces weren’t lining up, so my husband had to do a little bit of adjusting, but nothing major. But the walnut color is beautiful and it looks elegant.
