The trunk is as it looks. Hinges seem strong but even if they weren't, the wood is so light that it wouldn't hurt fingers. If you are looking for a solid piece of furniture, this isn't it. This looks like a really nice little trunk, straight out of the box, appears to be solid construction. Lightweight, solid bottom, slat design for sides and top, treasure chest style. Just add feet! The legs are color coded with stickers because it matters where they go due to the angles.
