These shelves are beautiful wood and are pretty deep. I love the color as well. I wanted something to put plants on and they are solid holding a lot of weight. I had a bit of trouble putting them up because the studs in my wall weren't spaced right they were to far apart to hit two studs. I ended up using one stud and 4 drywall anchors. Absolutely love how these turned out. I followed the directions and washed the protective oil off of the metal brackets (warm water and dish soap), let them dry completely, and then sealed with clear polyurethane. I needed a very specific minimalist shelf to display a sculpture I purchased. I wanted a true floating shelf, but the weight capacity of the shelves I was considering gave me pause. So, I purchased this one, which as other reviewers have noted is not a true "floating shelf" due to the exposed pipe brackets, and I am not disappointed. The extra support that the brackets provide gives me peace of mind for the art piece that is displayed on the shelf, and the industrial look in black finish ties in to some of the hardware on our barn door (also purchased from Wayfair). The instruction booklet is very easy to understand, "dumbed-down" for someone not gadget-y.
