A lighter shade would have been too light against my woodwork and paint color. I didn't want them dragging on the floor, and I didn't want to attach the curtain rods to the wallboard above the window trim. I opted for 72" instead of 84". All of the drapes are behind plants and furniture, so the length doesn't show. Panel width is the finished width between the first pleat to the last. At least 2X of fabric width are used to make pleats and folds, which are more gathered than other headings and have permanent sewn-in pleats for a more elegant and aesthetic look.
