The uses a simple butterfly mechanism - gently pull on either end of the table to 'open' the sliding mechanism and reveal the extension piece concealed under the top. I LOVE this dining set! I got it in the natural tone and it is perfect. The chair upholstery is more beige than cream, which works for me. I am doing a cream/ beige monotone home and this fits right in. The seats are a little stiff but still comfortable. It was a challenge to put it all together!! Took me most of a day. Had to have help to lift and place the table top. But was worth it. The directions are not great but I figured it out. All the parts were there and no damage to anything. Feels sturdy. I am using it as an oval with the leaf in. Very roomy for 4 people. Delivered inside my home 3 days after ordering. Just be careful with the last 6 screws for the chairs. This small dining table is the perfect size for two and our compact kitchen dining area. It looks decent and doesn’t feel cheap, just appropriate for the price. Assembly only took 20 mins for 2 people, although we did have to put some effort into screwing in parts 4, as they were difficult to fit properly. We were also unable to install parts 7, it seemed like they didn’t quite reach the pre-drilled holes even with the bolts. In the end, we decided not to use them, and the table still feels stable and sturdy. The color is more neutral in natural daylight and slightly more yellow under warm indoor lighting. It’s a cute table! The expansion is really easy and the color is just as it looks in photos when in natural light (my photos are under artificial light though).
