I’ve had these for five years now and i’m obsessed. i e received dozens of compliments over the years. I sprayed immediately to get the rust color. I do wish I only sprayed a little so I could have enjoyed the grey a bit longer because it was gorgeous as a mix of color but it is what it is. Now these are COOL! And goodness, what a brilliant assembly structure. Those little locking tabs are genius. A couple bottom screws and boom, done. They’re well built and exceptionally sturdy. I sprayed the hydrogen peroxide, vinegar and salt solution and they were good and rusty in like two hours. I like that they come with a special netting basket for dirt in the top shelf area should you decide to plant insist rather than just use pots. I’m not sure which direction to go yet. I have a similar hose pot that is very large and bulky. What I love about this one is that it is more compact and is more modern with the black finish. However, it may not fit a real long hose. Ours is a 50-foot flexible hose. Lid seals nicely and I like the center piece that keeps the hose from getting tangled. Looking for an authentic, weathered outdoor metal planter? Start with this bare steel planter and let nature slowly do the rest. Corten steel was originally developed for use in railroad cars. It is considered “weathering steel” and is made of a group of alloys that together have exceptional tensile strength and corrosion-resistant properties. When exposed to the weather, the steel forms a layer of rust on its surface that serves as a protective coating. This controlled corrosion creates the rustic, antiquated appearance for which Corten steel has best become known. The weathering process may take a month or so depending on the elements to which the planter is exposed. Note: Oxidation in Corten steel is typically slow, but some planters exposed to excessive rain or moisture/heat combinations might weather more quickly. Similar to eager gardeners planting bulbs in the fall expecting brilliant colors in the spring, anticipation for the transition from bare steel to a weathered rust-look is part of the natural gardening experience.

The special ferrous powder and iron preparation added in its coating penetrate deep into the cement. The surface oxidizes with sunlight and moisture in the air, giving out a blaze of color. When delivered, its surface has been oxidized for some time, explaining the colors it takes on. They will continue to change as time goes by like a watercolor painting of nature, recording the color of the wind, the smell of sunlight, and the temperature of moisture. Each records the wonderful and magical changes of nature in its own way. It doesn't require extra chemical handling. Spraying water would expedite the color changing if preferred.
