The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. Overall, I’m really happy with this desk. It looks great, has plenty of storage, and the instructions made it easy to put together. The only issues I had were that one of the drawer handles arrived broken, and the desk doesn’t feel like it would support a ton of weight. It’s perfectly fine for a typical setup with a monitor, keyboard, and other desk accessories, but I probably wouldn’t overload it. Assembled it on my own, few tricky moments pay attention to which direction some of the holes are going and you will be fine. It is pretty much just as advertised, though when you build it, this desk does feel a little smaller in person. Also, my unit came with a damaged acrylic / glass panel, but the Wayfair and the manufacturer were really good to work with, made the process of getting a replacement part as painless as possible.
