The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. This cabinet is very nice. Very easy to assemble and sturdy. The lights are changeable. You can do one solid color, multi color, mixture of color. The one thing I don’t like it the light won’t stay off it just turns on randomly.
