The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. The problem is I have an issue struggling with right bottom drawer. It seems like the metal slider has a flaw. They looks exactly like the rest. But I couldn't slide drawer in and out. Overall, this was excellent furniture at a reasonable price. Huge. Solid. Good for the price. Heavy as a mother. You have to put the entire top part together, including the desktop, then lift it and set it on top of the bottom. You need three people. Trust me you need three people. If you don’t use three people, you may wind up in urgent care with a broken finger. This desk is an excellent value at this price point. Pressed wood, but looks realistic enough. It’s quite solid and well made. It does take quite a bit of time to put together but I wouldn’t say it was hard. The directions had a lot of detail and were simple to follow. I put it together mostly alone over two days (desk one day, hutch the next). My only complaint is the picture on Wayfair is misleading in color. It is not a true grey as I had hoped.
