The hand crank to open and close it turned easily and fully extended it covers a lot of space. You do have to play with the clamp/arm to get the angle you want, but its easy to operate. This umbrella turned out to be bigger than I anticipated. It was super easy to build, instructions were very clear. I did need help to attach the umbrella to the bottom stand but overall, it took about 40 minutes to put together.
