The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. Beautiful cabinet! Very solid piece and looks more costly than it is. Well worth the 8 hours it took to put together. :) We added it to a spare bedroom used as a workout room/reading room. It has plentiful storage for hiding and organizing things you don't want out in the open, while still having a nice space to display those miscellaneous collectibles one acquires on trips abroad. The light feature has 2 different temperatures (cool/warm) which elevate the entire piece. We store our board/card games in the cabinetry/drawers as well as craft supplies, small photoshoot props, office supplies, etc. The height is impressive! I haven't styled the glass shelves yet. This Murphy bed is an ideal choice for small apartments. When folded, it can immediately free up a lot of space for daily activities. The outer panel of the bed is cleverly designed, which can be used as a temporary workbench or for placing items. The side of the bed is equipped with sufficient storage shelves, providing a lot of storage space. Whether it is books, decorations, daily clothes or exquisite jewelry, they can be stored neatly and orderly.

This piece takes quite a while to put together and requires at least 2 adults to do it well. The assembly hardware doesn't fit tighly and easily shows because it is a contrasting color. I do not foresee the bookshelves staying in place with heavy use because the stabilizing pegs are too small for the holes. The swinging feet readily loosen every time you put it up or down. This unit perfectly utilized a tiny 8x10 “bedroom” in my 126-year-old house. I use it as a multi-purpose guest room (for one) and craftoffice area. It’s super resourceful and space-saving which I love and wouldn’t have otherwise conceived would be possible given how tiny the room is. That being said It’s a great deal for what you get, but what you get is a fully occupied weekend for AT LEAST two people, and that’s if you’re familiar with assembling furniture, which I am. This was hands-down the most tedious and time-consuming piece I’ve ever assembled—however, I expected that to be the case and prepared myself for it. I would advise separating all the parts by step (hardware especially) beforehand to prevent stupid mistakes like using screws on step 37 that were meant to be used on step 13. Every detail matters. I am single but I can see how this project could potentially end in divorce. All in all, it’s a great piece for the money—just prepare yourself for not just hours, but DAYS of labor. Highly recommend for the patient DIY folks. The instructions aren’t great but they rarely are. Fortunately there are QR codes on each step which link to videos showing the guys in the factory assembling it. They are beautiful, substantial, have tons of storage, and feel very sturdy. The white finish with the darker wood top looks even better in person. Fair warning though assembly is a PROJECT. The first desk took us about 5 hours, and even knowing exactly what we were doing, the second still took about 4 hours. I would absolutely recommend having two people, plenty of space, and a whole lot of patience. That being said, the instruction manual was surprisingly clear and helpful. There are simply a LOT of pieces and steps involved. Once assembled, though Worth it. They look like much more expensive pieces of furniture and completely transformed our homeschool room. I especially love all of the drawers, cabinets, shelving, and built-in desktop outlets. If you’re willing to survive the assembly process, I highly recommend them. These are nice storage cabinets. It took about 8 hours to assemble two units. We put 2 of these cabinets in a nook in a bedroom. They fit perfectly Instructions were clear and helpful. The shelves are stationery but will hold many things. We like the added glass doors at the top, which make it a little nicer in appearance. I gave 4 stars because 1 of the tall doors came with only 2 holes bored for the hinges. So we had to wait for it to be replaced before we could finish. Wayfair is very fast to respond to damage or parts issue and they worked with the manufacturer to get the door replaced in just a few days! It did take 2 people to place the top of the unit onto the bottom half safely. This is a very nice piece and went together very well.
