It works, but you have to be intentional about how you mount it. All three joints move in a single direction, so don’t assume you will have the ability to change the direction later on. I have a similar mount-on-the-wall light which allow for more movement and I somewhat expected that to be a standard. Also, you should plan to use a shorter bulb if you don’t want it sticking out. These are SO cute and were perfect for my small bedroom. These are one of my favorite purchases from Wayfair so far. They were an easy bedroom addition without needing an electrician. My house was older with a small scale. The downward light provided warmth (used frosted warm bulb) for nighttime reading. They give an upscale vintage look (almost art-deco(ish). They are high quality and solid. I changed my furniture knobs and bedroom fixtures to match the metal tone of the lamps which added softness and cohesiveness without drawing any particular attention to the subtleties. It made my otherwise basic and small bedroom feel special with a low price tag. I was worried about the asymmetrical cord movementplacement so I stuck a computer cord organizer (holder) to the wall behind my nightstand so the plug-in cord stayed perpendicular to the ground. I added another near the baseboard that guided the cord (parallel) to the outlet behind my bed because I had a little open wall space between my nightstand and bed. When opened, the adjustable tube pivots 360 degrees as needed to direct a sharp, bright beam of light emitted by an included integrated LED. An integral fingertip dimmer and touch on/off switch is recessed in the wall plate.

This is a lovely, small piece but imperfect and returnable for three reasons (a) the edges are sharp enough to poke/cut a hand reaching in the middle of the night, (b) Unless you recess it into the wall, you'll have a funny looking box on the wall and ( c) while the dimmable light is a great feature, I would prefer no blue light as the night darkens.
