The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. It took close to five hours to put together... but I thoroughly read the directions before starting, then didn't rush. Took about four times stopping and starting... First run was 2.5 hours, then shorter spurts with a 10 y/o "helping". It was not difficult to put together; the directions were actually very good. We have two pieces with cracks, but they seemed superficial and surface-level. One edge on the back was not trimmed to slide the backing in - had to take a knife to the plastic trim blocking the groove. The lights around the mirror have three color tones, plus you can adjust brightness. My daughter also loves the LED strip inside the glass top. It is painted with a chalk type paint, very flat, no sheen, there are 2 pieces, the hutch and bottom drawers, it is very heavy and solid, took 3 men to lift the hutch onto the bottom drawers. There are no holes for electrical/cable cords, we had to drill those ourselves. The cabinet was missing 2 shelves as well as 1 drawer with putty filler, there was a mistake when they drilled the holes for the hardware pulls. Great quality solid dresser very heavy looks great and it should last a very long time. I do have to mention that there are a lot of pieces in putting this together the directions were good but could have been a little better in a couple of areas. All the parts were there and all the markings on the wood are there for screwing in the screws or any of the other hardware. I took my time it took me 4 hours to get it all put together put it in the bedroom and get it all organized with all my stuff. It looks great and I know it was put together right because I did it myself and its a very solid d.resser no weak points at all. I do recommend using a drill. My drill went dead before I was halfway through so I had to use the hand screwdriver and allen wrench. After charging the battery some more I finished up with the drill. I also recommend after you get it all put together dont put the drawers in yet, turn the dresser on its side and install the open swing door, that way youre facing down and can drill down instead of trying to do it with it standing up, you wont be able to do it that way.
