The carvings do have some relief to them they are not flat so the protrude a bit into the seating comfort, but comfortable for two people and if you sit back and slide to the arm a bit to avoid the carving you can be comfy. If your looking for a plump rolled arm that's nice to lay your head on, this will disappoint -- as will the interior padding and throw pillows. The pillow-fringe is sparse. The fabric feels thin and rough to the touch. It's advertised as a synthetic/cotton mix, but it's hard to feel the cotton. Not a piece around which to center a room or color-scheme.
