Matelasse (mat-la-SAY) is a weaving or stitching technique yielding a pattern that appears quilted or padded. Matelass may be achieved by hand, on a jacquard loom, or a quilting machine. It is meant to mimic the style of hand-stitched quilts made in Marseilles, France. It is a heavy, thick textile that appears to be padded, but actually has no padding within the fabric. Our Hugh Matelasse has a soft, pebble-like texture.

A large Jacobean floral design graces our Chelsea matelasse fabric, for an addition of traditional elegance to any bedroom.

A beautiful piece. Know that the length works IF you don't tuck in the spread under pillows. Width is not sufficient to cover both sides equally to the floor. This could be a function of our king mattress being tall, however. The width is not a problem, however, since only one side of the bed faces the entrance to the bedroom. Color: We got the gold/burgundy. Gold is the operative word, and in certain light, the color is more like a paper bag. In retrospect, we should have chosen the off-white or the brown. To get more variation in the color and to see a little of the burgundy, I flipped the spread on upside down. Now, I can see more variation in the color and a LITTLE of the burgundy. Did not order bedding set but the quilt only; shams were not available. Ordered king size for queen bed so that sides would be longer, they are, (maybe too long). We happened to have shams and coverlet that work OK. We have not washed this quilt; will have to take care NOT to pull the long decorative stitching during washing. This is medium weight. I have been looking to replace a favorite quilt that is so old it is coming apart. I thought this may be the one. It is not exactly what I had hoped for. The material is burlap-y, not soft and smooth like I hoped. It also has a smell that I think is from the dye. I am going to attempt wash it in the hopes that it will be better. The label says it is washable in delicate so that is what I will do. I was also a bit disappointed that for the high price it would come with pillow shams.
