There are 8 lighting effects that can be set including, combination, in a wave, sequential, slow glow, chasing/flash, slow fade, twinkle/flash, and steady on. Once the timer function is selected the lights will turn on in the pre-programmed timing sequence of 6 hours on and 18 hours off over each 24-hour period. This will continue until the lights are switched off or the remote battery power dies. When using the remote, make sure it’s pointed at the USB plug for it to work, the signal receiver is built into the USB plug. Would have given it 5 stars but it did not stand tight in the stand, like in the picture, it was wobbly and I had to keep messing with it to stop it from being crooked. Star is beautiful and worked well on a little (Holiday Aisle brand) 2.5' Nordic Spruce, but I had to attach it rather from the side by the top - nesting it in and winding branches to secure vs placing it atop the top branch.
