Winter hardy to zones 10 to 12, Strelitzia reginae is an easy plant to grow in the garden. Plants do well in full sun to semi-shade, love a rich loamy soil and plenty of water throughout the year. They respond well to regular feeding with a slow release fertilizer and compost. They are, however, very tolerant plants and will thrive in most soils and can survive with very little water once established. The plants are also wind resistant and grow well in coastal gardens. Strelitzias are sensitive to cold and would need a sheltered position in areas with frost, as the flowers and leaves are often damaged by frost. In cold climates, it is better to grow them in pots that can be moved indoors when freezing temperatures are expected. To grow indoors, pick a well-lit, sunny spot. In the summer months screen against the very bright direct sun. Keep drier in winter months and use a well-drained soil. Bird of paradise need moderate temperatures 55 to 65F at night. When temperatures rise above 70F. outside, place your plant in a semi-shaded location with good air circulation. Remove dead leaves and flowers as they occur.

Phoenix canariensis, commonly called Canary Island date palm, is a large evergreen palm tree with a massive trunk that matures to 40-60' (less frequently to as much as 90') tall. Notwithstanding size, this palm is a slow grower which may only reach 10' tall over the first 15 years. The trunk is topped with a rounded crown of upright arching palmate leaves which gracefully spread to 20-40' wide. Although native to the Canary Islands, this palm is now grown in frost-free areas around the world. In the U.S., it is grown in Florida, Georgia (southern coast), Gulf Coast, Texas (southern), Arizona, Nevada and California. It will grow in Hawaii, but distribution there appears to be limited. This palm is noted for having a massive, thick, columnar, single, gray-brown trunk (matures to as much as 4' in diameter) with distinctive diamond-shaped leaf base scars. Winter hardy to USDA Zones 9-11 where this date palm is best grown in fertile, medium moisture, well drained soils in full sun. Tolerates light shade. Although this palm will withstand some frost in winter, it is likely to suffer significant frond damage or die when temperatures dip to 20 degrees F. This palm performs well in containers where much more compact growth typically occurs. Container plants often thrive in a soil based potting mix in full sun, but with some part shade during the heat of the day. In cool climates, containers may be overwintered indoors in bright but cool (55-65 degree F.) temperatures.

A low-branching, bushy tree originating in Central America, Annona muricata is known as soursop in English and guanabana in El Salvador and other Spanish-speaking countries. The soursop tree, which can grow from 25 to 30 feet tall, produces an oval-shaped fruit with tender yellow-green skin and white, juicy flesh often made into drinks, sherbet, preserves and sweets. Grown in a variety of countries, including Mexico, the West Indies, northern South America, China, Australia and Africa, soursop prefers a tropical climate and cannot survive a frost, often suffering damage at 30 degrees Fahrenheit and dying at 26 degrees Fahrenheit. U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 10 and 11 in rich, well-drained soil with 5 to 6.5 pH suit this warm-weather plant best. Water soursop plants often enough to keep the soil moist, but not wet, during hot weather. When the weather turns cool in the winter, reduce water intake. Soursop plants tolerate drought well, but can develop pest problems if kept too wet.

If you are lucky enough to live in USDA hardiness zones 8 to 11, you can grow a banana plant (Musa spp.) outdoors and let it get as large and spread as wide as the space you have in your garden. But if you're hankering for a tropical environment and live in a colder zone, you can still grow this stunning specimen indoors in a container. Most types of bananas plants prefer to grow in full sun, meaning at least six hours of direct sunlight on most days. However, some varieties can scorch easily and will do better in partial shade. These plants love organically rich, deep soil with good drainage and a slightly acidic soil pH. They typically have poor tolerance for salt in the soil. Banana trees are tropical and originate in rainforests, so they need a lot of water and plenty of moisture in the air. They do best when planted in groups fairly close together, as this helps to retain moisture in the leaves. Water regularly to make sure the soil stays evenly moist but not soggy. Avoid overwatering, which can cause root rot. These plants thrive in warm, humid conditions, but they don't like temperature extremes. Even the hardy, cold-tolerant banana tree species prefer consistent temperatures ranging between 75 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

Warneckii' dracaena (Dracaena deremensis 'Warneckii') is a green dracaena cultivar with white stripes along the edges of its leaves. It is a shorter dracaena that matures to a height of only 4 feet tall. While its low light requirements make it easy to grow indoors, it can also be grown in shady sites outdoors in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 10b and 11. Other cultural requirements for 'Warneckii' are also fairly easy to meet. When these requirements are not met, or if it is exposed to a common chemical, the leaves tend to develop unsightly brown tips. Overwatering, underwatering and dry conditions can cause dracaena brown spots on 'Warneckii' leaves. It should generally be watered once per week but this varies, depending on the season and humidity levels. In dry homes or dry outdoor conditions in spring, summer and fall, 'Warneckii' dracaena may need to be watered more often. A 'Warneckii' dracaena grown in a container should be watered until the water drains from the bottom. Empty the water from the catch basin below the container. 'Warneckii' does not require high humidity but, if the humidity level is less than 40 percent, the leaf tips may turn brown and brittle.

Bring the taste of the tropics to your home garden with the Avocado Tree (Persea americana), a fast-growing, evergreen fruit tree prized for its rich, creamy fruit and lush, tropical appearance. Known for its glossy, deep green foliage and upright growth habit, the avocado tree adds year-round greenery and can be grown in the ground in warm climates or in large containers in cooler regions. With proper care, this tree will reward you with buttery avocados perfect for slicing, mashing, or adding to a variety of recipes. The tree typically develops a broad canopy and sturdy trunk, maturing into a beautiful landscape specimen. While it may take several seasons to produce fruit, the wait is well worth it. Avocados thrive in warm, frost-free climates, but they can also be grown indoors or in greenhouses where temperature and light can be controlled. A self-fertile variety will bear fruit on its own, though planting multiple trees can often increase yield. Whether you're an experienced gardener or just starting out, the Avocado Tree offers an enjoyable and rewarding growing experience for those who appreciate fresh, homegrown fruit and a tropical aesthetic in their outdoor space. The Russell Avocado Tree is a unique and eye-catching variety best known for its unusually long, slender fruit and excellent eating quality. Native to Florida and well-suited for USDA Zones 1011, this cultivar thrives in warm, humid environments and has become a favorite among gardeners and collectors looking for something both ornamental and productive. The tree itself has a moderately upright, open growth habit and typically reaches 20 to 25 feet in height, making it relatively easy to manage in backyard settings. What truly sets the Russell avocado apart is its distinctive fruitshaped like a gourd or cucumber, the avocados can grow up to 18 inches long, making them a conversation piece in any garden. Despite their unconventional appearance, the fruit is remarkably delicious. The skin is smooth, glossy green, and easy to peel, revealing a pale green interior with a high oil content and minimal fiber. The flesh is creamy, rich, and buttery, with a nutty finish that appeals to those who enjoy a full-flavored avocado experience. Russell avocados typically ripen in mid to late summer, offering a valuable early-season harvest. As a Type B flowering variety, it can serve as a pollination partner to Type A cultivars. Its exotic appearance, superb flavor, and reliable production make the Russell avocado a standout for anyone seeking a striking yet productive tree.
