It is a lovely painting by the artist, however the gloss on it is terrible. It looks like a third an inch of dried Vaseline on the art with grooves on it. I hate how glossy it is. It catches the light and glares back so it’s hard to see the painting. In some parts there are globs of gloss that look like they were accidentally made. It’s got streaks and lines of texture and it’s so gross and distracting from the image itself. The frame is also overboard huge and distracting from the painting. What a shame. When the advance guard of nearly 240 British soldiers arrived in Lexington, they found about 70 minutemen awaiting them. The British troops were ordered to seize and destroy military supplies, including weapons and ammunition, that were reportedly stored by colonial militia in the towns of Lexington and Concord. The final painting, Old Age, is an image of death. The man has grown old; he has survived the trials of life. The waters have calmed; the river flows into the waters of eternity. The figurehead and hourglass are missing from the battered boat; the withered old voyager has reached the end of earthly time. In the distance, an angel is descending from heaven, while the guardian angel hovers close, gesturing toward the other. The man is once again joyous with the knowledge that faith has sustained him through life. The landscape is practically gone, just a few rough rocks represent the edge of the earthly world, and dark water stretches onward. Cole describes the scene: "The chains of corporeal existence are falling away; and already the mind has glimpses of Immortal Life."
