These whiskey barrel planters are great. Our family has had three more just like them for 16 years. One is used as a small water feature with a bamboo fountain and the other two as traditional planters. Because of the size and material the soil does not dry out too quickly. For these two new ones, I've converted them into self-watering planters using sturdy 22 inch saucers and 1/2 inch solid-braid nylon rope for wicking the water up into the soil. Came upon this when looking for DIY pole holders. Purchased the larger size and am very happy. Product came with clear instructions and was easy to put together. The pole insert seems sturdy as well, but I am thinking I will drill a hole on bottom so no water accumulates at bottom.. The piece looks nice and seems sturdy. This is nice, but.... It took a lot longer to put together than I wanted. The wood is not finished, so you need to do that yourself. That also adds to the cost. I bought a "green" varnish for the inside and regular for the outside. Be careful not to split the wood screwing together the boxes if you are off center. I just received my Lacquer Finished oakwood Split Wine Barrel Planters, this morning, delivered by FEDEX ground delivery service. They did send me the other barrel planters with the galvanized barrel hoops instead of the barrels with the black hoops but, not an issue. These ones are equally as nice. They are well built and they should last a long time. When I was ordering them I thought that they came with drainage holes already drilled into the bottom of the planters but, I will have to drill some holes, myself. I am handy with a drill so, again, not an issue. These barrels do have some weight to them so it takes a bit to move them around. I use to be able to lift 80 lbs. square haybales but, I must be getting old because these barrels feel like they are heavier then the 65 lbs. indicated in the description and specifications of the barrels so I'll just use by garden cart to move them to where they have to go. With their look, these barrels are going to add that little extra something to the look of my garden and they are going to look even nicer with the plants that I add to them this spring. I was thinking, as well, that if anyone does a lot of family get togethers or gets together with friends out at the lake or elsewhere during the summer months, if they drill a few drainage holes in the bottom of these barrel planters, they can fill the planters up with crushed ice and use the barrel planters just like a cooler to keep their canned and bottled drinks cold especially if they are entertaining a big crowd.. This channel automatically diverts all overflow water to the front of the barrel and keeps your foundation from flooding. The large opening which can be used for downspouts is covered with a soft, fine mesh, plastic screen. This screen keeps out heavy debris and insects for your piece of mind. Also included with the barrel are the two, offset spigot locations. Now you can use a 5-gallon bucket or hose simultaneously without issue.
