The painting depicts the miracle of Jesus calming the storm on the Sea of Galilee, specifically as it is described in the fourth chapter of the Gospel of Mark.It is Rembrandt's only seascape.

The Battle of the Chesapeake, also known as the Battle of the Virginia Capes was a crucial naval battle in the American Revolutionary War. September of 1781, Washington had British troops surrounded in a siege at Yorktown. A British fleet from New York led by Rear Admiral Sir Thomas Graves was sent to help Cornwallis. A French fleet led by Rear Admiral Francois Joseph Paul, the Comte de Grasse, got to the Chesapeake first and engaged the British. The battle was won by the French, and prevented the Royal Navy from reinforcing or evacuating the besieged forces of Lieutenant General Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, effectively securing independence for the Thirteen Colonies.

The Empress of Ireland was involved in one of the worst peacetime shipping disasters of all time. She was built in 1906 for the Canadian Pacific Railway Co... This model is 100% hand built from scratch using "plank on frame" construction method. Master craftsmen have spent more than 75 hours to finish it. This model was painted in red, white and black, the original colors. It has magnificent details which include plank decking, metal rails, multiple life boats, davits, metal stairs, painted smoked stacks, anchors, and advanced rigging. The word Empress of Ireland is shown on the hull. The model is rested on a solid wood base with metal nameplate.

This battle took place on October 25, 1812, early in the War of 1812, about 500 miles west of the Canary Islands. Stephen Decatur masterfully maneuvered USS United States to outgun and outmatch HMS Macedonian, crippling the British ship while sustaining minimal damage. After a prolonged battle, the Macedonian surrendered, and Decatur towed the captured British ship back to the United States, marking one of the first major American naval victories over the British. "Pell-mell" is an expression that means doing something in a disorderly, chaotic, or hurried manner, often with little organization or control. In the context of Howard Pyle's painting the term describes the American soldiers charging recklessly and with wild energy over the fortifications to engage the British defenders. It highlights the chaotic and desperate nature of such a battle, emphasizing the intensity and lack of strict discipline in that moment. Yet, in this particular battle, this energy was what won the battle.

The third in the series, Manhood, shows the now-grown boy amid the tribulations of adult life. Storm clouds darken the sky. The wind whips at the man's clothing, and rain falls in the background. The river has become rocky and rapid, running through a treacherous defile marked by a gnarled, leafless tree. Gentler country lies at the bottom of the defile and the sky lightens in that direction, hinting of better times ahead. Amid the dangers, the man has not lost his faith: he has let go of his boat's tiller (which may have broken) to lift both arms in prayer. Behind him, unseen, the guardian angel continues to watch over him through a break in the clouds.

In 1922, a bulldog was inducted into the United States Marine Corps by General Smedley Butler. As a result of the Germans of WWI giving the marines the name "teufel-hunden," or devil dogs. The dog was promoted to Sergeant shortly thereafter and was named Sgt. Jiggs. Then, he was promoted to sergeant major. The first of a succession of bulldogs died in 1927 and was buried with full military honors at Quantico, Virginia.
