With a provocative, straight-on gaze, crossed legs and a less-than-proper pose for a young woman of her day, this Victorian portrait of the artist's mistress, Elena Vecchi, caused quite a stir when exhibited in Florence by a man generally more known for painting the prominent and fashionable.
