The U.S.S. Constitution, a three-mast frigate, is the world's oldest commissioned warship. Built primarily with dense southern live oak, its hull was 21 inches thick in an era when 18 inches was common. Paul Revere forged the copper spikes and bolts that held the planks in place. The 204-foot-long ship was first put to sea in 1798 and its most famous era of naval warfare was the War of 1812 against Britain, when it captured numerous merchant ships and defeated five warships, including the H.M.S. Guerriere. It was during the ferocious battle with the Guerriere that British seamen, astonished at how their cannonballs were bouncing off the Constitution's hull, cried out, 'Sir, Her sides are made from Iron!' Hence, the nickname, 'Old Ironsides''. The Constitution today is a national landmark and is docked in Boston.

It was originally going to have 90 guns, but King Charles I personally insisted that a ''great ship'' be built for the English Royal Navy, so it went to sea with 102 bronze guns. The vessel was the most extravagantly decorated warship in the Royal Navy, completely adorned from stern to bow with gilded carvings. The ship was later renamed Sovereign and then Royal Sovereign. It was destroyed by fire in 1697 in Chatham.

The original Lady Washington was a 90-ton merchant sloop. She sailed around Cape Horn and participated in the fur and pelt trade with the coastal Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest and in tea and porcelain across the Pacific in China. She was captained originally by Robert Gray, and later by John Kendrick, former captain of her larger sailing partner, the Columbia Rediviva (Kendrick insisted he and Gray switch vessels mid-journey). Under the command of Kendrick, she was refitted as a brig (she was formerly a sloop). She became the first American vessel to reach the island of Japan in an unsuccessful attempt to move some unsold pelts. The Lady remained in the Pacific trade and eventually foundered in the Philippines in 1798.

Wood pattern of hull on the model I received is different than example on website. My model has hull of alternating bands of dark and light wood....giving the ship a striped appearance. Also, all-white rigging doesn't match example on website. Best to make it dark rigging as in all other models by Old Modern Handicrafts. It has wooden booms connected to the main and foremast. All the sails are rigged beautifully together to make up the beautiful boat. On the deck, there are authentic hand-built lifeboats with ribs and planks. The bowsprit goes through the gunwale that is hold securely to the bow by riggings. Cabins and companionways are located on the wooden deck. You will find metal anchors near the gunwale inside the two golden ornament piece of the Bluenose. This model is truly a remarkable representation of the Bluenose II.

She was to sail halfway around the world to Tahiti, collect sapling breadfruit trees, and transport them to the West Indies. Owners of the burgeoning British plantations there needed a cheap source of food for the workers.

Excellent sale / HMS Bounty / Old Modern Handicrafts. Love it ! Outstanding craftsmanship. Beautiful woods. The rigging is incredible. The sails are perfect. So many small fittings add richness to this amazing work of art. The attention to detail is remarkable. Expert packing. It came boxed with an interior wood crate and all I needed was a screw driver to pry the small nails holding the frame in place around the ship which was tied off inside the frame and cushioned with styrofoam. OMH provides directions inside the Certificate of Authenticity envelope and I recommend looking at that first. The ship itself was fully assembled with the exception of the front mast which locks and hooks into place as per the instruction. There are 3 screws to hold the ship to the wood base that were easy to tighten with the allen wrench enclosed. Fast FedEx free shipping. I could not be happier with my purchase. Great product.
