This is my first ever stove top purchase because the ones I've gotten when I've bought a house have been durable. I don't do a lot of cooking so I can't speak to how well it does when cooking x number of meals a day, week, month etc but I can say that I love this stove. Our last GE stove had a smooth ceramic cooktop which cleaned easily, never scratched, and looked as good when we moved as it did when we first bought it. Jump ahead to the present, when we bought all new stainless GE appliances for our new home...and I HATE the cooktop! Within nine months there are significant scratches and what seem to be permanent stains, despite taking all the required precautions, having the appropriate cook wear, and using the recommended/provided cleanser and cleaning procedures. I don't know how the quality of the cooktop materials could have changed so much in the course of a few years, but I'm very unhappy with the current version. An appliance designed with such a fragile work surface doesn't make sense for a functioning family kitchen.
