Sargent of the U.S. Coast Guard on June 6, 1944, during the D-Day landings at Omaha Beach in Normandy, France. The photograph captures a visceral, real-time scene of U.S. Army soldiers from the 1st Infantry Division disembarking from a Higgins boat (LCVP) into the choppy waters off Omaha Beach. The men wade toward shore, heavily burdened with gear, while under direct enemy fire from German fortifications. The image's composition — taken from the rear of the landing craft — puts viewers in the middle of the peril, evoking the terror and bravery of the moment.
