They are attached to the range hood blower to clean the air before recirculating back into the house. Ductwork is not necessary. The interlocking baffles allow for more capture of grease in the filters due to the rapid flow of changing air direction. As grease is heavier than air, the grease stays trapped on the baffles and promotes better air flow within your kitchen. Nice piece, but it's really more of an institutional item and assumes that you are replacing an existing urinal or have framing in place to accommodate an install. Installing this in a dry-walled garage, for instance, will take some doing including cutting away drywall and add 2x4 supports.
