The two gold crowns refer to the juxtaposition of the English Prince returning triumphant and victorious in his Gothic gold armor and crown contrasted to that of Christ's crown of thorns with a glowing golden halo. Jubilant and elated ladies toss flower petals and banners are flown but all the Prince can see is the reminder that riches, pride, and acclaim are fleeting things. As a portraitist, Victorian Frank Dicksee exhibited at the Royal Academy and was particulary renowned for his series of oil paintings of Medieval Shakespearean characters, following his father, Thomas Francis Dicksee's lead. As an illustrator incorporating classical and Pre-Raphaelite styles, he became famous in his own time. It is a lovely painting by the artist, however the gloss on it is terrible. It looks like a third an inch of dried Vaseline on the art with grooves on it. I hate how glossy it is. It catches the light and glares back so it’s hard to see the painting. In some parts there are globs of gloss that look like they were accidentally made. It’s got streaks and lines of texture and it’s so gross and distracting from the image itself. The frame is also overboard huge and distracting from the painting. What a shame.
