BEAUTIFUL rug!!! Super fast shipping - literally next day received. Excellent packaging….care clearly taken. Pics don’t do justice. IMO rug is more of a greige. Warm undertones in bright light and cooler in low light. Love the flexibility. Color depends on surrounding paint/ furniture/accessories. I’m not usually a Wayfair shopper, but I will now be back. An infant is safely ensconced in a boat guided by an angel. The landscape is lush; everything is calm and basking in warm sunshine, reflecting the innocence and joy of childhood. The boat glides out of a dark, craggy cave which Cole himself described as "emblematic of our earthly origin, and the mysterious Past." The river is smooth and narrow, symbolizing the sheltered experience of childhood. The figurehead on the prow holds an hourglass representing time.

The painting, combining figures, still-life, and landscape in one work, depicts a group of Renoir's friends relaxing on a balcony at the Maison Fournaise restaurant along the Seine river in Chatou, France. The painter and art patron, Gustave Caillebotte, is seated in the lower right. Renoir's future wife, Aline Charigot, is in the foreground playing with a small dog, an affenpinscher; she replaced an earlier woman who sat for the painting but with whom Renoir became annoyed. On the table is fruit and wine. The diagonal of the railing serves to demarcate the two halves of the composition, one densely packed with figures, the other all but empty, save for the two figures of the proprietor's daughter Louise-Alphonsine Fournaise and her brother, Alphonse Fournaise, Jr, which are made prominent by this contrast. In this painting Renoir has captured a great deal of light. The main focus of light is coming from the large opening in the balcony, beside the large singleted man in the hat. The singlets of both men in the foreground and the table-cloth all work together to reflect this light and send it through the whole composition.

Here is a truly unique antique tapestry - an antique tapestry that was woven in the United States of America around the turn of the twentieth century. While the art of tapestry weaving is a centuries-old tradition in Europe, it is a craft that has only rarely been practiced in the USA. This is one of the things that makes this amazing antique tapestry a truly magnificent example. Signed with a subtle “B NY” near the lower left-hand portion of the composition, this antique textile features a beautiful, classical depiction of a garden, with a comely building of pink standing slightly off-center in the background. The richness of the detail here is difficult to overstate: Impeccably woven trees and flowers dominate the piece, but everything that has been included in the composition is also precisely drawn. The overall effect that this antique tapestry achieves is one of deep and lingering beauty. It superficially resembles a painting but bears all of the hallmarks of an expertly woven tapestry. A unique and beautiful work of art, this antique tapestry from the turn of the century America is a miraculous example.

The final painting, Old Age, is an image of death. The man has grown old; he has survived the trials of life. The waters have calmed; the river flows into the waters of eternity. The figurehead and hourglass are missing from the battered boat; the withered old voyager has reached the end of earthly time. In the distance, an angel is descending from heaven, while the guardian angel hovers close, gesturing toward the other. The man is once again joyous with the knowledge that faith has sustained him through life. The landscape is practically gone, just a few rough rocks represent the edge of the earthly world, and dark water stretches onward. Cole describes the scene: "The chains of corporeal existence are falling away; and already the mind has glimpses of Immortal Life."

Love the rug. Smaller than 8x10, but was told in advance. My only disappointment is that the color was described as red, but I would call it rust. Does not blend with another rug in the room. I did not consider returning the rug, so I must be pleased. LOL. Anonymous. Mon Oct 06 2025
