If you're intimidated by wood crown, try foam! I'm actually very impressed with how real it looks. Installing them on our laundry cabinets was a breeze. We used a simple handsaw to cut miters. Glued it onto the cabinet, caulked some seams, and wa-la! Before painting, we did a quick sand and then two coats of paint. One thing about the foam I really like is once it's painted it looks smooth without any brush strokes -- looks factory painted just like the cabinets. It's important to note that with this design, the center square goes above the ceiling grid vs. sitting below it, so this is perfect for my application as the basement in my home is quite low in some areas where there is duct work, allowing me to optimize head space versus other designs that droop below the ceiling grid.
