When not in use it is flush with the stovetop which helps create a flat seamless flow on the countertop. When we have used it, it works very well. The product arrived late due to "weather" however there was no weather issues along the route. Once it arrived the package was severely damaged. There were loose screws floating around and the styrofoam used to support hood was busted and no longer protecting the unit. We have not installed the unit yet to see if it functions but there were minor metal pieces bent. The pieces bent looking salvageable so hopefully it works once installed. Bought this kit as a convenience. You can probably purchase the parts individually cheaper from other manufacturers if you want to spend the time and shipping costs. The intake fittings are too small to cover the openings left by my original bathroom fans. This required additional framing, drywall, mudding and painting as the grill did not hide the repair. A larger grill is available at extra cost. The items included are all good quality and installed easily once the initial prep was completed. Overall, happy with the quality, not the design or cost..
