Uniquely illustrated with a more modern aesthetic as a one-off map by E. Koppe, this bird's eye view of Salem, Oregon, is a visually stunning piece of cartographical history. With full inserts of the Marion Courthouse and the State House of Oregon, this depiction of the capital city transports a viewer back in time. Located in the center of the Willamette Valley, Salem is bisected by the 45th parallel, the halfway point between the Equator and the North Pole. Salem's domestic economy has always relied heavily on agriculture. The Willamette River forms the boundary between Marion and Polk counties and is also responsible for the fertile alluvial soil in the plain. Due to the richness of the land, Salem was a frequent destination for enterprising farmers. It was advertised as the "Land of Milk and Honey," throughout the nineteenth century as settlers moved northwest on the Oregon Trail. In this perspective map, the peak of Mt. Hood can be seen as a backdrop for the numerous fields and farmhouses. While Koppe's illustration lacks the high level of detail often associated with bird's eye view productions, his unique style gives the viewer a sense of the history of the region and its flora and fauna equally. Interestingly, his edition lacks the typical directory of local businesses or prominent merchant's homes, indicating that this edition was produced for less commercial purposes. Little is known of Koppe, and this appears to be his only illustration of a map; a truly distinctive piece of cartographical history.

Created by the CIA in 2005, this map depicts the Antarctic region and the outlying Islands. Home to year-round research stations, the continent is the coldest, driest, and windiest on the planet. This map displays the international claims within the continent, which has no traditional boundaries as it is uninhabitable by anyone other than international researchers. Though the continent is primarily covered in ice, recent techniques have been developed to study the unique geology that lies beneath. Geologically Antarctica is similar to the southern Andes Mountains. The original Amundsen-Scott South Pole station was built near the center of the continent and was built in 1956, making it the first permanent structure. The station is the southernmost habitation on Earth and is named after the first two explorers to reach the South Pole. Norwegian Roald Amundsen was the first to reach the South Pole in December 1911, followed one month later by the British expedition led by Robert F. Scott. The dome was abandoned in 1975 after the construction of a geodesic dome. Eventually, the dome was also left behind after the completion of the current station, which was officially dedicated in 2008. The unique climate in Antarctica makes it particularly well suited for conducting astronomical research due to the lack of light pollution or cloud cover. Scientists from around the world also study glaciers, geophysics, meteorology, and bio-medicine in the station. The insert on the map details the most densely populated portion of the continent on the Antarctic Peninsula with eight international research stations.

Published in 1870 by the prolific lithographer Currier & Ives, this stunning depiction of New York City shows the iconic American city at a time of great transition and prosperity. The conclusion of the Civil War five years prior was allowing the country to recover and the economy to expand. Tourism was increasing, and the city became the number one destination. Grand hotels were being built, and the city was about to begin the Gilded Age. Bird's eye perspectives were illustrated to allow citizens and merchants to display civic pride and noted essential and prominent buildings. These depictions give insight into the history of America, and their unique aesthetic transports the viewer back in time. New York City was bustling at the start of 1870 and had seen mass immigration from Ireland for the past ten years due to the Great Irish Famine. The Irish comprised nearly a quarter of the cities population, whose great migration was rivaled only by that of German immigrants who were fleeing cities disrupted by revolutions in the middle of the 19th century. This would start to change as immigrants from across the globe began to arrive in the following two decades with the opening of Ellis Island in 1892. Brooklyn established Coney Island in the 1870s, and it became an iconic destination for beachgoers since its inception. The five boroughs had yet to be consolidated, although the cultures and unique features of each were developing and evolving into what would become recognizable today.
