The painting is smaller than I had envisioned, but that's my fault. The dimensions were for the picture and the frame; I should have realized that. However, my husband thinks it's the perfect size for a wall in our living room. Afterward the fashionably dressed gathered for dinner at the Armenonville Pavilion, a sparkling restaurant on the shore of Bois de Boulogne, bringing together the many of the beautiful people and varied personalities and classes including the pictured notorious Spanish actress and dancer, La Bello Otero star of the Folies-Bergere. Gervex, sometimes considered an Impressionist, was also an academic and classically trained painter who favored larger works including wall panels. On one of his many travels, Gervex was commissioned to paint portraits of the Czar Nicholas II and the Russian royal family.
