I followed the directions and washed the protective oil off of the metal brackets (warm water and dish soap), let them dry completely, and then sealed with clear polyurethane. Great shelf! Easy to install right into studs. One of the L-brackets was clearly less that 90° angle but it didn't actually make a difference. I hung it and everything is level. Color was accurate too. One thing to note: is is not a solid piece of wood. The one I received appears to be at least two pieces glued together. But, it was a pretty seamless joining so I am happy.. While I love the look of this shelf, the bracket is very lacking and will not hold it level. Most hidden brackets have "arms" that extend out the length of the shelf but this one does not. Therefore, there is very little support and the whole shelf droops in the front.
