One year ago I bought a cheaper pergola from another company; it had the nylon roof you pull back with a cord, no side screens available. The roof was flimsy and noisy whenever there was a breeze, and if you forgot to close it tight before a rain, the weight of the water was going to tear it . It actually wasn’t 10x10 as advertised, maybe 9x9, and the sun came under the east & west sides, no you were seldom shielded from the sun. So I tried Wayfair after noticing my neighbor’s, got the same one only I ordered the pulldown screens for 2 sides. It also has a louvered metal roof ( huge improvement), we love it! This took a good amount of time to put together, but that shouldn't come as a surprise. We were missing two louver brackets and the LED lights, but eventually everything came in. The shipment packaging is extremely well done and even though there was damage to the boxes, the product was sufficiently protected had no damage due to shipping. The 12x20 pergola I ordered is close to 1000 pounds shipping in 7 boxes so the heaviest single box is about 150 lbs so two people are needed to move it around. The instructions recommended 4 people for the install. I had my brother to help but due to the weight I wanted 6 people (one at each post) to move the assembled product to minimize damage to the frame. High quality parts all around but because it’s all aluminum that is great for lower weight but it is still 1/2 ton of weight that needs to be moved around during an installation. I wasn’t sure this could be as perfect as it is considering the affordable price. It has exceeded expectations. Other reviews have mentioned the difficult assembly directions. I found the directions to be sufficient and was able to assemble the pergola properly, in a reasonable amount of time. Allow most of a day to do it. Having two people to assist you makes the construction of the pergola much easier and safer. Particularly important as the various parts are put together and erected. We love how high the ceiling is on this, it doesn’t block our view of the water from the house. We have a house on a lake and we looked at a lot of pergolas after another shade tent blew away during a storm this spring. We wanted something heavy and this is it! We needed three people to put up the four corner posts and top rails, and we could have used four people. Putting up the initial frame is not a two person job. However, once it gets to the point of needing to put the slats in, one or two people can easily do it. It just takes longer than expected since each slat is screwed in on both ends individually. It looks great, the two roof sides can adjust independently for open and close and the handle is easy to operate. We didn’t get the side curtains, but there’s always a shady section for us to sit as the sun moves around. It’s waterproof in the rain and when the sun goes down we open the slats so we can look up at the sky and stars. We have six armchairs under this and it’s great not having to cover them up each night. The rain doesn’t touch them. This is heavy enough that we have not needed to anchor it but may before winter, since we plan to leave it our year round. Everyone who sees this asks where to get it. I hired a landscaper to assemble and install the pergola. Keep in mind that assembly is not installation. The pergola requires appropriate attachment of the four columns to a footing to prevent movement of the columns. Took two weeks to get an assembly PDF and video from Wayfair. I will return to this review to provide an assembly and installation update. May, 26 UPDATE: Disappointed. Poorly constructed of thin, weak metal. I had a local steel fabrication shop make custom footing brackets because the stock footing brackets are weak, paper-thin, poor quality, not offering any assurance that the pergola would stand up to any wind. The pergola instructions claim assembly time is 1.5 hours. For us, from the time starting with unboxing the parts to the final drilling and anchoring the pergola was 4 hours. Would not buy again..
