One year ago I bought a cheaper pergola from another company; it had the nylon roof you pull back with a cord, no side screens available. The roof was flimsy and noisy whenever there was a breeze, and if you forgot to close it tight before a rain, the weight of the water was going to tear it . It actually wasn’t 10x10 as advertised, maybe 9x9, and the sun came under the east & west sides, no you were seldom shielded from the sun. So I tried Wayfair after noticing my neighbor’s, got the same one only I ordered the pulldown screens for 2 sides. It also has a louvered metal roof ( huge improvement), we love it! For the Price - This thing is Great. I am really enjoying and so far, holding up steady. I live in the almost always Sunny, Southern California so it has not had to endure much weather related pressure, however it has rained twice. The wind will blow the shade off the magnets and it slides, unless you strap it down with the Provided velcro wrap. My problem is that I am too short to reach it so it would require a step ladder for me every time I want to open or close it... so I personally just leave it unstrapped, and if it blows open too far, i just push it back. also the wind blowing the shade can cause a bit of noise as the fasteners that slide the shade back and forth make a bit of a clanging. Nothing you can't get used to, as I already have. but initially it could be annoying. Since the columns are metal, you can actually hang up magnets on them for an added personal decor that isn't permanent like a sticker. The lighting strip that is built in works good, however, it is extremely dim lighting, mainly gives alil ambiance but does not light up the space fully, so I added a wrapped sting of lights from pole to pole that I already had and definitely helped. This retractable pergola would have been the perfect solution in my damaged patio enclosure way back 2010. The issue I initially had is the color of the canopy. The color of the canopy is dark gray that is close to black which is as I see in the photo looks is lighter. The reply to my wish to switch this canopy turns disappointing because this is the only one they have. I had it already installed by my paid installer so no way I can return the whole item. I like the materials all in all.. Heavy and strong. I cannot move the box compared to the first one that I ordered in other store which I did not even open because I can tell by the weight of the item shipped. That is the reason why I still make a 4 star review and I accepted the 10% refund to use as remedy and buy a fabric paint that will make the canopy water proof . Water leaks when it rains. I still love this because of being retractable and really fits half of my patio enclosure that has still the screened structure around intact even without the roof that was damaged by the snow storm in 2010. I use my patio as my workshop room and growing plants . I will be buying another one to complete the whole enclosure project. Turned out nice. Had this professionally installed and mounted the post in concrete blocks to give more stability. The metal pieces itself is lightweight aluminum but when connected together it’s sturdy. Only gripe are the shade connector poles. Their means of connecting could be improved because they slide off & disconnect from one another every now & then but so far holds up well with rain when shade is pulled back. I absolutely love this awning. It’s exactly what I was looking for. It is very well priced and looks very pretty. Sorry for the delayed review, but I did need to hire someone to install it. The assembly and install were a little challenging, even for a master electrician. It wasn't the level of difficulty but rather very vague instructions and more than one incorrect picture. However, we prevailed. Warning: DO NOT remove the tape and zip ties from the arms of the hardware. They are spring-loaded and should not be released until the awning has been hung. Otherwise, it'll be like trying to put a cat in a bucket of water. (we were smart about this) To assemble, have a helper on standby to pull the awning through the roller channel while someone else pushes it. A kid can help with this part. One person can assemble the main hardware. To install the brackets to the home, one person is fine as long as they have the correct drill bits and measure correctly. The brackets are great quality; however, they may not sit flush and level to the wall. We placed 2x2 blocks of wood behind each bracket to fill the empty space and make the install strong and level. To install the awning, you'll want a strong teen or adult to assist.
