We ended up buying 6 inch mattresses and my husband had to build extended legs for it to come off the ground enough to be able to slide the bottom in and out even still I’m not able to slide the bottom in and out. I have to wait for my husband to do it for me. I would recommend going with a five or a 4 inch mattress unless you don’t mind possibly not being able to slide out the bottom. The bed looks great (as pictured) and is very sturdy (as my toddler and her friends constantly jump on it). I bought a 7 inch mattress for the trundle and it fits perfectly. I bought a 12 inch mattress for the top and it also fits, but a 10 inch might have been better.
