The seat part of the sofa is not hard but not soft. I would say medium to soft but this is understandable given it is a sofa bed and I am overall very impressed with its comfort. I have always wanted an oversized chaise lounge chair. It took my husband about an hour to put it together and another 15 minutes for us to fluff the pillows and get the big, upholstered cushion and slipcover velcroed on.
