Handlebar and wheels need to come off. This could be difficult unless you are well versed in bike mechanics. Once packed, it is quite narrow and tips over easily. These racks rock. Each order comes with two plates. Depending on how you stack your bikes you can fit two bikes on one 16 inch plate. Definitely cut down on my wall space. I ordered two sets, but I was able to fit 6 bikes on just 3 of the plates (sixth bike is my son’s bike, not in the pictures).
