When not in use it is flush with the stovetop which helps create a flat seamless flow on the countertop. When we have used it, it works very well. this item was purchased for a new install. Meaning there was no other disposal it was replacing. It was super easy and is so amazingly quiet, which is awesome due to the open style floor plan. It will never drown out anyone's TV program! It's slim so it will fit in even the smallest space!
