Growing a mango tree is best suited to tropical and subtropical hardiness zones where temperatures do not fall below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Although it can be tricky to grow, a mango tree can make an interesting specimen when grown in a large pot outdoors or indoors. In the right conditions, this tree forms a dense canopy of long oblong green leaves and rewards you with flowers in December through March; the fruit comes three to five months later. Mango trees planted in the garden are more likely to fruit than potted trees, but small varieties suitable for containers, such as a dwarf spotted mango, are capable of fruiting if they receive enough sunlight. Mango trees grown in a garden or potted on an outdoor deck or patio usually fare somewhat better. Saplings should be planted in spring; in the garden, it's important to plant during a cool season. A mango tree will require plenty of light and warmth to keep it happy. This tree reacts very badly to temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit and will drop fruit if it gets too cold. Indoors, it can be hard to provide the plant with enough light to thrive. Young mango tree seedlings require bright light but not direct sunlight. Once the tree starts to grow and mature, it requires as much sunlight as possible, which may mean a potted tree needs to move outdoors. The mango tree needs at least six hours of sun per day and preferably eight to ten hours.

Guava fruit trees are not a common sight in North America and need a decidedly tropical habitat. In the United States, they are found in Hawaii, the Virgin Islands, Florida and a few sheltered areas in California and Texas. Guava trees are attractive and produce deliciously rich, sweet fruits that are excellent fresh or in desserts. Given enough guava tree information, it is possible to grow these small trees in a greenhouse or sunroom and reap the benefits of their Vitamin C-rich fruits. The guava fruit grows on a small tree with a wide, short canopy and a sturdy single to multi-stemmed trunk. The guava tree is an interesting plant with mottled greenish bark and long 3- to 7-inch (7.5 to 18 cm.) serrated leaves. Guava trees produce white, 1-inch (2.5 cm.) flowers that yield to small round, oval or pear shaped fruits. These are more accurately berries with soft flesh, which may be white, pink, yellow or even red, and which varies in taste from acidic, sour to sweet, and rich depending on variety. Guava fruit trees are tropical to sub-tropical and may achieve 20 feet (6 M.) in height. Growing guavas requires cold protection, and is not suitable outdoors in most zones of the United States. They must have shelter from freezing winds, even in sunny warm climates where occasional icy temperatures occur.

Large corrugated leaves are good for tropical effects. White, fragrant flowers are followed by 1 12 inch edible fruits with texture similar to that of a pear. Use as a specimen, prune to a canopy with age. Suited to containers in colder climates. Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. For a tidy, neat appearance, shear to shape in winter. Its shiny bronzy green new foliage with reddish highlights is quite attractive, and it rarely sets fruit. Large panicles of deep pink flowers are showy in the spring. It looks best with regular pruning to maintain its shape, and regular deep watering to promote healthy growth. It may require regularly scheduled light top-trimming (but not necessarily shearing) of vigorous top shoots to maintain its height below 25'. It is not drought tolerant. Use them for tall screens or as large container subjects; beautiful when espaliered against a fence or wall. Both of the species listed here produce fruit enjoyed by birds, but only that of Eriobotrya japonica is eaten by people.

This variety is considered a Type A flower, making it a good candidate for pairing with Type B avocados to encourage better cross-pollination. Tropical guavas are one of the easiest to grow of all the tropical fruits. Once established, they do very well in the summer heat. There are hundreds if not thousands of varieties of tropical guavas. Most often people just refer to tropical guavas by the internal color of their fruit, although some select cultivars have been isolated. White guava fruit are soft, have chewable seeds, and turn a bright yellow when they are ripe. They have a stronger smell and flavor which makes them great for juice and jam. The fruit on this tree ripens in late spring and early fall. The flavor of the fruit is best for straight eating when daytime high temperatures are below 100 F., so about half of the crop is of peak quality in the fall and the majority of the crop is at peak quality in the spring. When ripe a white guava will fall off the tree. However, it is better to pick them right before they get to the falling point so that they are not overripe. To check if they are ready, cradle them in your palm and tap them with your fingers. If they fall off in your hand, then they are perfect.
