I didn't buy one when I purchased my Regal Pellet, and I regretted it for a few weeks until I finally bit the bullet and went back. Thick enough to hold some great heat--but not so thick that it's unwieldy. I sometimes drop it in place--as the Exact Fit suggests--and sometimes just lay it on top of my cast iron grates. It comes pre-seasoned, and I found the pre-seasoning acceptable. The key to long, reliable performance is the same for all cast iron. I clean mine while it is still warm, and I dry it on my gas range before taking it out to store inside my Regal. For Texan owners, this means you can have one side for grilling, and one side with a griddle, or both sides with a griddle. To clean, simply take a wet paper towel and a set of tongs after you have finished using and wipe across to loosen any remnants, if that is not enough, after the griddle has cooled it can be placed in the dishwasher and will look like new every time.

The griddle is a nice add on but since it's small like the grill it's hard to cook a lot of stuff on it like pancakes. I have to make a batch and put in the oven for warming. I will say the pancakes came out excellent but probably the same as a cheap electric griddle. I'd recommend getting the griddle but it's quite expensive for what it is.
