This is a very solid stool, and top step tall enough that I can reach the ceiling to change smoke detector batteries. While standing on the top step, another set of hands is needed because being that high up I did not feel entirely stable, but that is because of the height at which I was standing, not the stool itself. The stool itself is very solid and feels completely safe. when on the bottom or middle step, very easy to single-y use and the foam top rail grip is really helpful for safety (the bottom and middle step are great for reaching into a higher cupboard).
