If your soil is high in clay, adding sand at planting improves its drainage.

Although the macadamia tree is a popular commercial crop in Hawaii, its actually native to northeastern Australia. The tree is also grown in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, as well as in the warm climates of Florida and California in the United States. The macadamia tree is part of the Protaceae family. Although a slow grower, once the tree begins to bear fruit it continues to produce for years to come. Its foliage is a rich, deep green hue, with oblong blunt-tipped leaves that have spiny, serrated margins. These leaves develop in groupings of three to six, but almost never develop singly. When it flowers, its blossoms grow on long spikes called racemes, each with between a hundred and a hundred and fifty flowers on it. The average tree produces about 2500 flowers in a given flowering season. Trees take seven to ten years before they start to produce harvestable nuts. The tree will grow to a height of between 7-40 feet, although ones used in commercial growing are usually kept short for ease of harvest. Its nuts develop inside a round and hard woody shell. This shell is about five times harder than a hazelnut to crack, and has a whole host of uses on its own.

There are more than 300 species and hundreds of hybrids of clematis. Most clematis are woody, deciduous vines while others are shrub, or trailing types. Some species bloom in spring, others, in mid-to late summer. Most clematis are hardy in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 8 and native to North America. The blooms are spectacular with some flowers reaching up to 10 in. across. These showy flowers in the form of saucers, bells, tubes, tulips, open bells, doubles, and semi-double. The flowers are usually in the cool shades of purple or pink though they do come in a stunning array of tones including blue, white, magenta, yellow, and bicolor. Clematises appreciate a trellis, post, or stationary structure to climb, without something, the vine will sprawl, including over the ground. Hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies love their blooms. Grow in fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Vining hybrids are best sited in locations where the flowering parts of the vine are in sun to part shade but the roots are shaded. Some light afternoon shade is usually beneficial in hot and humid summer climates. Roots should be kept cool, shaded and uniformly moist. Root areas may be shaded with perennials, annuals or small shrubs. A thick root mulch is appreciated. Do not allow soils to dry out.

Mrs Cholmondeley' _ 'Mrs Cholmondeley' is a vigorous, deciduous, perennial climber with pinnate, dark green leaves and, from late spring to late summer, single, veined, lavender-blue flowers with rounded, widely-spaced petals and brown stamens. Mrs. Cholmondeley Clematis features showy blue star-shaped flowers with sky blue overtones at the ends of the branches from early to mid summer. It has green foliage throughout the season. The compound leaves do not develop any appreciable fall colour. The fruit is not ornamentally significant. Mrs. Cholmondeley Clematis is a multi-stemmed deciduous woody vine with a twining and trailing habit of growth. Its average texture blends into the landscape, but can be balanced by one or two finer or coarser trees or shrubs for an effective composition. This is a relatively low maintenance woody vine. It is a Type 2 clematis, which means it will bloom primarily on old wood of the previous season, with a second flush later in summer. Dead and weak vines should be removed in late winter, and remaining vines should be trimmed back to the first buds that are seen to remove dead stems. It is a good choice for attracting hummingbirds to your yard. It has no significant negative characteristics.

Aristolochia littoralis, commonly called calico flower, is a tropical twining evergreen vine that produces unusual flowers, each of which resembles a dutchmans pipe suspended on a thin stalk. It is native to South America, but has naturalized in certain tropical areas around the world as well as in Central America and the southern U.S. Where winter hardy, it will grow to 15-20, but can be grown smaller. In one growing season, it will grow to as much 8 long. Plants produce slender stems clad with alternate, simple, heart- or kidney-shaped, glossy light green leaves (to 3-4 across) that are gray-green beneath. Leaves are malodorous when bruised. Each flower is shaped like a curved pipe, hence the common name. Flower color is creamy white densely mottled with deep purple-brown. Vines primarily bloom in summer and fall, but in warm climates are free flowering. Flowers are pollinated by flies. This vine is synonymous with and formerly known as Aristolochia elegans.

The dusty miller plant (Senecio cineraria) is an interesting landscape addition, grown for its silvery gray foliage. Lacy leaves of the dusty miller plant are attractive companions for many blooms in the garden. Dusty miller care is minimal when the plant is established. Although the dusty miller flower blooms in mid-summer, the small yellow blooms are small and not considered showy. Foliage of the dusty miller plant, however, is long lasting and drought resistant. As with most silvery, furry plants, growing dusty miller helps the garden remain attractive through the heat of the summer. It will also tolerate frost. The dusty miller plant is often grown as an annual and discarded after the first season; however, it is an herbaceous perennial and may return in USDA plant hardiness zones 8 to 10. Growing dusty miller can handle the heat, but is best planted where afternoon shade is available during the hottest months of summer. Dusty miller care may involve a midsummer trim if the plant becomes leggy. The dusty miller flower may be removed to keep the plant compact. This specimen can grow as tall as 1 foot, but often remains shorter. Leave a few flowers to bloom in late summer if you wish the plant to self seed.
