Soft and firm at the same time. I got this for my daughter to go with her new twin canopy bed (still being assembled). Its firm enough to offer back and body support, yet the top part is a pillow top-- like people often add on for the softness, but this one is just part of the mattress. I think this mattress will be great! I just opened it yesterday so I think it is still working itself out (its a little lumpy looking) but i think once its had some time it will be great. It seemed comfortable, although I haven't slept on it yet so I can't say for certain. Laying on it to test it out I had no complaints though. I love this mattress. When I was shopping for one I knew I wanted something alittle more firm than the one I had been using and this one is perfect.
