The trunk is as it looks. Hinges seem strong but even if they weren't, the wood is so light that it wouldn't hurt fingers. If you are looking for a solid piece of furniture, this isn't it. I am very happy with this wooden box. It really looks impressive. I keep this on a side table in the kitchen. Love the vintage look. My husband takes many medicines and I wanted something decorative to keep them in. I have no idea why this item is described as "tan." It is a warm golden color that goes well with the golden oak in my room. My only concern is how it is packaged. This wooden box is inside a cardboard box that is inside an outer carboard box. Packing tape holds both boxes sealed on the top. Getting the outer box open is easy. However, when attempting to open the inner box, DO NOT USE A BLADE IN THE CENTER OF THAT PACKING TAPE.
