The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. Beautiful Desk, but One Incorrect Part This desk is absolutely gorgeous, and the instructions were fairly easy to follow. My wife and I assembled it together in roughly three hours, although I do have quite a bit of experience assembling furniture. Unfortunately, I had to deduct one star because the shipment included an incorrect critical part for the center drawer cabinet. We received three identical base pieces for the vertical cabinets, but the center cabinet is slightly narrower and should have included Part #30 instead of Part #3. Rather than wait two weeks for a replacement, we modified the larger piece to make it fit. It worked, but it left a small imperfection—a gap of roughly one inch at the bottom right corner.
