Inspired by the mythic sea nymphs of ancient Greek lore, the Nereid Sculpture captures the quiet poetry of forms shaped by the sea. Carved from warm travertine, the spiraling shell-like motif evokes fossils and ocean relics long preserved in stone, its rhythmic ridges unfolding in graceful symmetry. Resting upon a solid base, the sculpture feels like a fragment of the ancient shoreline—an object that might have been gathered during a Grand Tour along the Mediterranean coast. Both organic and architectural in presence, the piece reflects Maitland-Smith’s enduring appreciation for classical inspiration, storied materials, and the romance of collected treasures.
